Understanding your filling & construction
Goose down
Fine, three-dimensional clusters that hold air and create warmth without bulk. Down is naturally breathable and compressible, but it relies on its loft to perform.
Goose feather
A minimal feather content (usually 5%) helps the filling recover and retain structure. You may occasionally see a fine quill at the lining; this is normal and not a sign of damage.
In our collection, this down-and-feather filling is used in different outer shells, while the inner lining is always polyester:
Leather outer, polyester inner lining
Down- and feather-filled coats and jackets with a smooth leather exterior and polyester lining: the insulation sits between the leather shell and the polyester lining.
Polyester outer, polyester inner lining
Technical or quilted coats and jackets where both the outer shell and inner lining are polyester, with the down-and-feather fill stitched between.
The filling care is similar in both cases; the main difference is how the outer fabric should be treated.
Rule of thumb
- Avoid prolonged compression: do not store under heavy items or in tight straps for long periods.
- Keep away from direct high heat (radiators, heated rails, tumble dryers on high).
- If the garment becomes very wet, let it dry fully and gently re-loft the filling.
- Always follow the care label as the final reference for that specific piece.
Day-to-day care
- After wearing, hang the coat or jacket on a broad, sturdy hanger to support the shoulders.
- Gently shake the garment to redistribute the filling and restore volume.
- For polyester outers, light surface dust or marks can usually be removed with a soft, damp cloth.
- For leather outers, wipe with a soft dry cloth; if needed, use a slightly damp cloth only and avoid saturating the leather.
Cleaning
Down-filled outerwear does not need frequent washing; over-washing can fatigue the filling. Clean only when genuinely needed.
Spot cleaning
- For both leather and polyester outers, begin with a soft cloth or sponge and cool water, dabbing gently.
- On polyester, a little mild detergent can be used and rinsed carefully.
- On leather, avoid detergent where possible; if absolutely necessary, choose a product specifically formulated for leather and test discreetly first.
Full cleaning
The correct method depends on the outer fabric:
Leather outer with polyester lining
- Do not machine wash.
- Take the garment to a specialist leather cleaner experienced with down-filled outerwear.
- Specify that it has goose down and a small percentage of feather in the filling.

If the care label permits, you may wash at home:
- Use a large-capacity machine on a delicate or down-specific cycle with cool water.
- Close zips and fasten snaps, then turn inside out if the fabric allows.
- Use a specialist down detergent or a very mild liquid detergent; avoid fabric softeners and bleach.
- Run an extra rinse cycle to ensure all detergent is removed.
- If in doubt, choose a professional cleaner familiar with down-filled coats.
Drying & restoring loft
Drying is the most important step for down and feather-filled garments.
- Immediately after washing, press gently to remove excess water; do not wring or twist.
- If the care label allows tumble drying, dry on a low temperature with a few clean dryer balls or tennis balls wrapped in soft cloth. Check regularly and break up any clumps of filling by hand during and after drying.
- If air drying is mentioned on the care label, lay the garment flat on a rack or hang it in a warm, well-ventilated room, away from direct heat and sunlight. Gently shake and massage the baffles periodically to separate clumps and restore loft.
- Ensure the filling is completely dry before storing or wearing; damp down can lose loft and develop odour over time.
Feather tips & quills
With a 5% feather content, very fine quills may occasionally work towards the lining or stitching.
- If you feel or see a small quill, do not pull it out. Instead, carefully massage it back inside the baffle from the opposite side of the fabric.
- Occasional feather migration is natural and not a fault; it does not affect performance when handled gently.
Storage between seasons
- Clean the coat or jacket before long-term storage if it has seen regular wear.
- Store in a cool, dry place, hanging on a broad hanger. Avoid tight covers that compress the filling.
- If using a garment bag, choose a breathable fabric (cotton or canvas), not plastic.
- Do not vacuum-pack or store in small boxes; down needs space to retain its loft.
What to avoid
- Prolonged exposure to heavy rain without an umbrella or waterproof shell (the filling can become saturated and lose loft temporarily).
- Direct heat sources for drying: radiators, heated floors, hairdryers or strong sunlight.
- Strong detergents, fabric softeners, bleach or dry-cleaning solvents not specified for down or leather.
- Over-stuffing wardrobes or travel bags, which compresses the fill for long periods.
